Was unexpectedly stranded in Dublin for 4 days because of Emma storm. Rented a car from Hertz at the very last minute before Dublin Airport was closed. Staff was very polite (even though visibly exhausted no doubt from the increased business from similarly stranded customers) and very efficient. Return was also smooth. No problem at all. Will rent again.

I’ve never written a review before. But my experience here was the very definition of a “Shake down.” Originally I order a BMW 5 series or similar. When I got the Dublin airport I was told an Audi A4 had been arranged. When I got to the car hire there was a sporty looking Jaguar waiting. Didn’t want the Jaguar as touring around Ireland in a gas guzzling sports seemed ridiculous. I was then told there were “deals” on the SUV’s. The “only” SUV available with automatic transmission was a Land Rover. After debating with my wife we were then told there were no other automatic vehicles on the lots. Jag or Land Rover were my options. Then came the talk about insurance. We were instructed that it was a requirement on the Land Rover so we got it. After the first day my wife noticed a few scuffs and a pretty serious ding on the back passenger door that were not listed on the vehicle assessment we received. We called. No answer. Rang 6 times and disconnect. Then the SUV needed Diesel exhaust fluid by the 3rd day. No answer from Hertz so I had to take it to a local garage near Letterkenny to have it refilled. 2 weeks later when it was time to go home this is where the fun started. Once I returned to Hertz the young lad came up to the car and immediately pointed out the Scuffs on the bumper. Hardly visible but noticeable once pointed out. Odd that it took him all of 1.3 seconds to find it. Almost like he may of knew it was there. After blaming me for that I assumed mentioning the obvious ding in the door would be pointless since this young man had the eyes of an eagle. Turns out he completely missed the ding. So I guess the next renter will be charged for that one. Once I got into the booth to pay he turns out the employee is new and needs to be shown how to write up an incident report. Looks like I’m exhibit 1 on the training schedule. He then tells me he will need to hold 1000 Euro until the damage department comes back with a quote. He then adds 1043 Euro for damage to my invoice and charges me immediately. At the end of the day an original booking that was supposed to cost 1300 Canadian is now nearly 5000. Thanks Hertz. I know where you get your name from now.

Total scam operation, avoid if at all possible. When we returned the car, a minor speck of paint (no dent, no scratch) was written up as "damage" with consequent $190 charge. Good thing we pointed out a larger scratch on pickup that was not written up - as the person told us, they would have gladly charged us for that, as well. --- update, the actual charge was $280. I will avoid Hertz wherever possible.

Used Hertz to rent a van for a day. Wouldn't use them again. Had phoned in advance, to ask whether I needed to go to the Airport terminal and take a shuttle to their depot, or if I could go straight to their depot (behind the Red Long Term Car Pk). Was told I could go straight to the depot. Queued for 45 mins to get the keys at the depot, was then told I couldn't leave my car there and would have to use the airport parking, so another 40 mins wasted driving to the airport and making my way back to collect the van. Price on the website was €49 for the day. When I dropped the van back I was handed by receipt, I realised they add €5 if you pay by debit or credit card. Finally, the next morning, I realised they had taken €3,183 from my current account (I paid the €54 by debit card), and I will only get this back in 3-5 working days ! This was not flagged or made clear at all, at the time I picked the vehicle up. Overall a really frustrating, inconvenient service.
