::This is something that you must support if you live in Waterford. If you live elsewhere maybe you could begin a similar project. This amazing project has transformed and given a new lease of life to a derelict site once earmarked for redevelopment as a large retail and hotel complex. The one unfortunate aspect of the whole affair is that a terrace of beautifully maintained houses, owned mainly by elderly residents, was purchased as part of the land-bank for the potential development but the development company fell victim to the recent recession in Ireland. Over time the once beautiful houses fell into disrepair and as a result of intense anti-social behaviour had to be demolished by Waterford City Council. What remained was an ugly derelict site covered with weeds, broken bottles, cans and other types litter. Edel Tobin – a woman who never takes no for an answer – came up with the idea of a community garden to be developed by the community and for the community with everything from labour, expertise and materials provided for little or no cost. Over a period of six months the site was transformed. Recycled goods such as lampstands, old tyres and broken tiles were given a new lease of life to enhance the community space which was formally opened by President Michael D. Higgins.
