  Very good for a quick visit. Small place, but very interesting.

  On holidays from work this week and decided to rediscover the history of the place I grew up in. So, I went to the museum on Stephen Street. There was no guided tour but the lady behind the desk showed me around. The first room is more or less dedicated to Yeats and houses his Nobel Prize medal and other memorabilia. Also, in the room there were a couple of chalices that were found in the Sligo Abbey. They were donated by the Dominican order. In the next room, there was an old large parade banner from the Irish League, the precursor to Sinn Fein. The third room had medals from soldiers who fought in the world wars and war of Independence as well as old currency. There was also a firkin (an old English measure) of preserved bog butter. The last room displayed artefacts that were discovered in the area from the stone and bronze ages. There were also a couple of stone slabs that had writings carved into them. The lady in the museum said they were from the early Christian period. They were found in Carrowkeel cemetery near Gurteen. In summary, I thought what was there was great and the lady who was working had great knowledge but I was disappointed it was such a small space. There is so much history in this place that I think it deserves a bigger space.
