    In 1252 the Dominicans took this Abbey from the Franciscans. The local Fitzjordans had married one of the Berminghams of Athenry and she wanted friars like the ones in Athenry. Some money was paid to the Pope and the Franciscans were evicted but this ruin has very fine stone carving and all of it is Franciscan. Historians have given it the name Holy Cross but the local Catholic Church which is beside the ruin is Peter and Paul's - the same as the name of Athenry!
